Analysis of Gasoline Crankshaft Connecting Rod Breakage Fault

Fault Manifestation:

The contact surface between the crankshaft and the connecting rod is seized. There are scratch marks on the surface where the connecting rod and the crankshaft are in contact.

Fault Cause: Lack of or insufficient lubricating oil, causing the contact surface (the inner surface of the connecting rod or even the surface of the crankshaft) to melt and be scratched due to high temperature.

Fault Analysis:

Failure to add lubricating oil (gasoline engine oil), or adding lubricating oil but not to the proper level, or adding the lubricating oil to the proper level but using the machine at an improper angle, resulting in the oil splash wheel not being able to reach the oil, leaving the contact surface between the crankshaft and the connecting rod without lubricating oil or with insufficient lubricating oil, leading to either no lubrication or no cooling at the contact surface. Usually, if it is at the rated operating speed, this fault will cause the crankshaft and connecting rod to seize within a few minutes, resulting in the connecting rod breaking and cracking the cylinder block.

Adding counterfeit or inferior engine oil will also cause the same problem.

Analysis Basis:

(1) For all internal combustion engines, the seizing (or locking) of the crankshaft and connecting rod is caused by the lack of lubricating oil;

2) Sometimes, the oil remaining in the damaged machine has no debris marks, indicating that there was no oil or the oil quantity was so low that the oil splash wheel could not reach it during operation, or the oil in the machine was added after the accident. The oil added later did not participate in lubrication, so it was still clear and had no debris (the oil was grayish black);

(3) There is also a situation where although the amount of lubricating oil is sufficient, when used on a slope greater than 25 degrees, due to the excessive inclination angle, the oil splash wheel cannot reach the oil, and the above faults or other components being scratched (or locked) and accelerated wear will occur.
