The functions of the piston rings in a four-stroke gasoline engine

1. Sealing function

The piston rings can maintain the seal between the piston and the cylinder wall, minimizing air leakage. This is the responsibility of the gas rings. They can prevent cylinder and piston or cylinder and ring seizing due to air leakage; they can also prevent faults caused by the deterioration of lubricating oil, etc.

2. Heat conduction function

The piston rings can disperse the high heat generated by combustion to the cylinder wall, serving as a cooling mechanism for the piston.

3. Oil control function

The piston rings can scrape off the lubricating oil adhering to the cylinder wall and maintain the normal fuel consumption. This is the responsibility of the oil rings.

4. Supporting function

The piston rings move up and down in the cylinder, and their sliding surfaces are entirely borne by the rings to prevent the piston from directly contacting the cylinder, providing a supporting function.

Piston rings are divided into gas rings and oil rings. The function of the gas rings is to ensure the seal between the piston and the cylinder, sealing the compressed air in the combustion chamber; the oil rings are used to scrape off the excess lubricating oil on the cylinder and prevent the oil from flowing into the combustion chamber.
