Engine Vibration Problem Analysis and Troubleshooting (Applicable to Brush Cutter, Chainsaws, and Garden Machinery)
Classified by easy-to-check → difficult-to-check, external → internal, with phenomena, causes, and simple solutions provided for easy on-site troubleshooting.
I. Installation / Frame Components (Most Common, Prioritize Inspection)
Loose fasteners / Aging and Damaged Shock Absorbing Rubber Sleeve
Phenomenon: Obvious shaking of the entire machine, strong vibration sensation on the handle, accompanied by abnormal noise during operation
Cause: Loose screws for the feet, fuel tank, handle, and gearbox; Cracked, hardened, and loss of elasticity of the shock-absorbing rubber, unable to buffer vibrations.
Solution: Tighten all the screws of the base one by one; Replace the aged rubber sleeve directly.
Frame and Shell Deformation
Phenomenon: Local resonance, large shake on one side
Cause: Shaking and bumping caused the shell and bracket to deform, with components interfering with each other.
Solution: Rectify the deformed parts to avoid component scraping during operation.
II. Power Balance & Crankshaft Transmission Components (Core Vibrating Source)
Crankshaft bending, connecting rod deformation
Phenomenon: Severe shaking upon startup, stronger vibration as speed increases, accompanied by abnormal noise
Cause: Overload stall, machine drop, cylinder seizure and jamming, collision impact.
Solution: Disassemble and inspect, replace deformed parts; cannot be repaired.
Flywheel loosening, imbalance, missing counterweight
Phenomenon: Dramatically increased high-speed vibration,机身 vibration, unstable idle speed
Cause: Loose flywheel fixing nut, flywheel damaged by磕碰, missing balance block.
Solution: Re-lock the flywheel nut; replace the flywheel directly.
Wear of bearings, excessive clearance
Phenomenon: Severe vibration + buzzing / clicking noise, little difference in cold and hot operation
Cause: Lack of oil, dust and water entering the bearings causing wear of the raceway and balls.
Solution: Replace crankshaft bearings, gear box bearings.
III. Cylinder, Piston, and Valve Mechanism Failures (Four-stroke engine mainly)
Severe wear / misalignment of piston and piston rings
Phenomenon: Large vibration + weak power, excessive exhaust, increased fuel consumption
Cause: Long-term lack of oil change, insufficient oil, poor lubrication.
Solution: Disassemble and bore the cylinder or replace the piston and piston rings.
Abnormal valve clearance, valve jamming (four-stroke engine)
Phenomenon: Obvious idle vibration, fluctuating speed, accompanied by "thumping" noise
Cause: Excessive / insufficient clearance, carbon deposits jamming the valves.
Solution: Re-adjust valve clearance, clean carbon deposits.
IV. Ignition, Fuel Supply, and Idle Issues (Indirectly Triggering Vibration)
Ignition System Failure
Cause: Carbon deposits on spark plugs, improper electrode gap, leakage in high-voltage pack, weak ignition, uneven cylinder work.
Phenomenon: Intermittent shaking at idle, acceleration jolting, "popping" exhaust.
Solution: Clean / replace spark plugs, check high-voltage lines and ignition unit.
Carburetor Failure
Cause: Blocked fuel lines, unstable fuel level, blocked idle hole, inconsistent work of each cylinder (multi-cylinder).
Phenomenon: Severe shaking at idle, prone to stalling, weak acceleration.
Solution: Disassemble and clean carburetor, adjust idle and mixture.
V. Transmission End (Crankcase / Working Head, Lawn Mowers Commonly Occur)
Crankcase lacking lubrication, gear wear, damaged teeth
Phenomenon: Vibration at the rear / working head position + metal friction noise
Cause: Long-term lack of lubrication, dirt and water entering the crankcase.
Solution: Add / replace lubricating oil, replace worn gears and bearings as a set.
Knife Disk / Blade imbalance, loosening, deformation
Phenomenon: Shock increases upon contact with load, slightly better in idle
Cause: Knives knocked and deformed, corners broken, screws loosening, tangled weeds.
Solution: Remove tangled objects, tighten the blades; replace deformed or damaged blades.
VI. Usage and Environmental Factors (Human/Regular Issues)
Idle speed set too high / too low
Idle speed too low: Unstable operation, periodic shaking; idle speed too high: Increased resonance of the entire machine.
Solution: Regulate idle speed according to the model standard.
Poor quality fuel, water in oil
Insufficient combustion and disordered power generation cause intermittent shaking.
Solution: Empty the fuel tank and replace with qualified gasoline.
